In order to hike this trail, a permit from the Regional Water Authority (RWA) is required.
The Lake Hammonasset trail system includes ten miles of trails around the reservoir. The shortest route around the lake which follows shortcuts is 7.4 miles, so plan accordingly and allow several hours.
There are several short trails that branch off from the Hammonasset Trail including the Lake View Trail (orange circle), the Oak Trail (blue circle), the Indian Cave Trail (yellow circle), and off that, the red circle Peninsula Trail, that provide shortcuts or nice lookouts.
The green circle Hemlock Trail offers scenic views of the Lake Hammonasset shoreline and rock formations along a small peninsula. This is the best trail for a short walk and a good place for observing waterfowl.

A permit can be acquired through the RWA recreation website.
