The John Muir Trail is located primarily in Paugnut State Forest, named after Chief Paugnut, who was the last survivor of his tribe in this region. The trail features a system of interconnected trails at it's northern and southern termini, connecting with the Sunny Brook State Park Alain and May White Nature trails to the south and the Walcott Trail loop in Burr Pond State Park. After ascending mountainous terrain, the trail offers a side trail to the summit of Walnut Mountain before descending rolling hills to its northern terminus.
The Blue/Red blazed Buttrick Trail offers a connection from the ridge down to the Sue Grossman Still River Greenway in Torrington.
