The Racebrook Tract encompasses 230 acres in Orange and 181 acres in Woodbridge. Racebrook Tract tract has a variety of habitats including stream belts, forests, wetlands, meadows, and brush, and is adjacent to open space running all the way to the Maltby Lakes, making this attractive to wildlife. Many species of reptiles and amphibians find the habitat to their liking and even avian predators such as the Great-horned Owl can occasionally be seen.
Although the trails are fairly level, there are some some uphill sections on the western side of the preserve. A handicapped accessible trail leads from the northeast corner of the parking area to the boardwalk.
Wetlands along Race Brook offer year-round birdwatching. Near the entrance to the red trail, just past the bend in the trail northward after it crosses the Race Brook waterway, the Orange Arboretum is found to the right of the trail. It features indigenous flowering species and a variety of existing red and white oak, pine oak, large, white and Norway spruce and birch trees. Each tree has a marker plate with its Latin and common names.
The Nature Trail boardwalk is currently closed for renovation.
The main Racebrook Tract parking area is located just off Racebrook Road (Route 114) in Orange, slightly north of Derby Avenue (Route 34).
To access the entrance from Racebrook Road in Woodbridge, park on Wedgewood Drive. The start of the access trail is on Racebrook Road, about 50 feet past the property line of the private house on the corner of Wedgewood Drive. There is limited on street parking is available at the Clearview Drive entrance off of Johnson Road in Woodbridge.
A section of these trails is closed for maintenance, please plan accordingly.
