Description

Lover's Leap State Park features a small network of mostly forested trails that run along the Housatonic and Still Rivers. The park is broken into three sections.

The lower section west of the Housatonic River and adjacent to the parking area contains the Waramaug Loop Trail along with several viewpoints and the ruins of the Indian Spring House.

The upper section across the Park Road from the parking area contains the Old Factory Trails and features the historic ruins of the Silex Factory.

Across the Housatonic River via the Lover's Leap historic iron bridge, are the Hurd Estate Trails, including the Lover's Leap Trail, the Tea House Trail, the Castle Loop, the Hurd Trail, and the out and back Falls Mountain Trail. This section of trails features additional ruins and a scenic vista.

Other Information

History:

Trails through the park will lead the walker through centuries of land-use history. Heading northeast from the parking lot the trail utilizes the 1895 Berlin Iron Bridge, one of five remaining in Connecticut, to cross the Housatonic River. Across the bridge, the Lovers Leap Trail heads southeast 1,200 feet to the rock formation that gives the park its name. From here, tradition has it, that the Pootatuck Indian Chief Waramaug’s daughter, Princess Lillinonah, and her lover plunged to their deaths. The Chief himself died in 1735.

The view to the south overlooks a now submerged Goodyear Island named for an early fur trader from Derby who came there to trade with the established Indian Community. Industrial era ruins still exist near the water on the northwest section of the park.

Rules:

  • The park is open from 8 am to sunset.
  • Pets on a maximum seven foot leash are permitted.
