The Pine Creek Marsh Open Space offers unique opportunities to experience restored tidal wetlands up close. After years of degradation, the salt marshes have been revitalized, showcasing their ecological functions and value. Visitors can explore the Salt Marsh Trail and observe self-regulating tide gates (SRTs) in action. These innovative gates replaced traditional “flapper” tide gates in the Pine Creek flood dikes, using adjustable float systems to regulate tidal flow for marsh restoration while automatically closing before high tide peaks to prevent flooding.
The main entrance, located off Old Dam Road, features a historic railroad bridge section. Originally part of a 19th-century bridge across the Connecticut River, the structure was later moved to Fairfield’s Mill Hill Road railroad crossing and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby, visitors can use the area around the bridge for launching canoes or kayaks. This spot provides access to Pine Creek for exploration and fishing, making it a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts.
PLEASE NOTE: The historic railroad bridge is currently under renovation, therefore the bridge and self-regulating tide-gates, as well as the access from Old Dam Road, are closed until May 2025. The northern part of the marsh can still be accessed from the Senior Center (Sullivan Place).
